Meditation, Old is Good...for What?

Don’t you get it
Silly youngin’
That if it’s old
Really old, so old
Nobody can read it
Hardly
Can’t even guess it
Hardly
That old
Don’t you know
Silly straplin’
That, that old
Makes it close
Really close
To truth because. . .
‘cause. . .
It’s so old
After all
They knew stuff
Back then
Them old folks
They knew back then
The people way back
They knew something
We don’t know
Silly child
Because. . .
‘cause. . .
They were close
Weren’t they to. . .
To. . .
The Egyptians
Or something
Something
Something. . .because
‘cause then they
Those old folks then
The heard the birds sing
Didn’t they? Or something
Different from us
And looked
And saw the sunset
Didn’t they
And the rise too
Didn’t they?
Didn’t they somehow
Different from us
In a place
In a place
That spoke to them
Unlike us
Unlike we
Silly youngin’s

How can the young’uns, or the other old ones hear the leaves rustling in the wind or the cicadas’ raspy serenade when they have cell phones glued to their ears and their entire being focused on what must surely be Very Important Conversations? Doesn’t that become their entire reality?

Let’s declare a one-day moratorium on cell phones (and similar gadgets by other names). Doctors and therapists will not be exempt; but they would be required to set their phones on “vibrate” and answer only emergency medical calls.

The young mothers strollering their babies along tree-lined streets might then hear the declarative caw of the crow and the croon of the doves. They might even talk to the child about them. With one hand on the stroller’s handle and the other now free to point, they could introduce the little ones to the blossoms on the catalpa tree, the big yellow bus and the teens playing pick-up basketball.

A whole world (yes, the same one that’s been there all along) would open up and the Verizon blinders would finally be off! And what would the trade-off be? A cessation of pointless, empty conversations that could better be enjoyed in person over a fragrant cup of coffee anyway. Reach out and touch someone – in person …
